For the past year Garinagu Empowerment Movement, G.E.M. a non-profit organization in Los Angeles, have been petitioning L.A. City Council to recognize April 12, Garifuna Day, as a commemoration to the Garifuna Diaspora. Recently the petition came before the City Council, was nominated to be voted on and was approved. On April 11, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. on the steps of City Hall, Jan Perry, Councilwoman of 9th District will hold a Press Conference officially proclaiming that day as Garifuna Day. Come out and celebrate this major announcement in your best Garifuna dress.

I think this is great news, and I'll definetly try and come down for it. I would like to know.... What is being done to publicize this within the Garifuna community? Do all the community leaders know about this? This one event that we need everyone's support. I'm going to tell everyone that I know.
