Living in the Lake Independence Area of Belize City there lives a woman who is the mother of five children. Her eldest son migrated to the US at a very young age. She is a single parent and the grandmother of two girls aged one and three years old. This story is exceptionally sad and surely an eye opener to youths worldwide.
About two and a half years ago, this woman’s youngest son was poisoned supposedly by his Step father who has since fled the country. The young school boy was hanging out at a nearby grocery store with some of his friends when his mother’s man approached and offered the youths a Guiness stout. Besides the fact that he was an under-aged youth, the man also ignored the fact that he was a schoolboy and should not be drinking. The boy gave three of his friends a sip from the stout that was also poisoned. After they all took a sip, the young boy drank the stout and fell sick later that night. He woke some time around midnight with cold sweats, unable to control his bowel movements, bleeding from his mouth and in tremendous pain.
His mother rushed him to the hospital, foaming at the mouth and bleeding uncontrollable, he later died in his mother’s presence. Unaware of the fact that her gentleman had given her son the poisoned drink, she was left in shock as to the reason why her son had become so terribly ill and later died.
While still at the hospital, two of the other boys who drunk from the bottle were brought in to the hospital. When the parents of the two boys sat down to console this lady, they all learned of the incident that caused these three kids to end up in the ER from one of the victims younger siblings who was present when they all drank the stout.
The mother of the deceased boy then relayed the episode that unfolded the day before that had caused the separation between her and her man. She then claimed that the man did threaten that he would kill one of her children because she left him. At this point the other two mothers became worried for their children’s safety since the first child had already died. Luckily both of the other youths were hospitalized for a few days, treated and released. Doctors say they were lucky because the amount of liquid they consumed did not hold enough poison to kill them but since the third child drunk the majority of the contents, it killed him.
This lady had to bury her child and authorities could not locate the perpetrator. No justice was served for her child’s death.
A couple months later, following rumors that her only daughter, a 15 year old primary school drop out and a mother of two young babies was suffering from advanced symptoms of AIDS. Rumors were long circulating that she had the virus but they were only now becoming evident. She suffered for a week in the hospital, her hair fell out, she became very, very thin, her fingernails fell off, her skin had many lesions and rashes, she became bed ridden, was unacquainted with her surroundings, her children and eventually she passed away.
Not too long after, this woman’s second eldest child was charged with murdering his best friend. They were at a friend’s house playing with a gun they thought was not loaded. The son was on the outside of the house and his best friend was inside. They were playing around and the son was trying to get the door opened while the best friend held it shut from the inside. The son pointed the gun at his friend through the screen of the door and told him that if he did not open the door he would shoot him. He fired a single shot and to all their dismay, the gun went off and the bullet hit his friend in the head. All the other youngsters who were on the scene ran off in fright. The boy was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The son was sent to jail until his trial comes up but is now out on bail.
As if this was not more than enough for a single mother to bear, she had to quit her job in order to care for her two granddaughters who are also infected with the HIV virus because no one wants to care for the two sick children while she was at work. One of the two babies is now showing symptoms of AIDS related sicknesses and the grandmother can only watch her suffer until she eventually dies. The grandmother is jobless and no one wants to assist her in any way. She has tried getting financial help form government ministers, church leaders, neighbors and friends but everyone has turned their backs on her.
It’s such a sad story and too much for one person to bear but I have to ask myself, what did she do to deserve so much pain and suffering?
