In the past 3 - 4 years I've seen this massive push to Promote Belize Music, basically punta rock. Only since the beginning of this year, I've noticed that Belizean Artists going back towards the genre of Reggae, and also noticing that the new generation of Artists are trying to crossover into Hip-hop, R&B and rap.
Is it too difficult to promote Belize Music (Punta Rock)? Has that window of oppertunity to spotlight and blow up Punta Rock to the music world passed? Do the Punta Rock Artists think they have exhuasted the well of good Punt Rock music? Am I way off left field with this?
What do you guys think? It would also be good to get the thoughts of some of the Belizean Artists on this subject.

I think that the push for belizean artist in other musical genre have nothing to do with the push for publicizing punta rock. I believe that a lot of the young punta rock artists don't have the vision to see past making a couple hundred or thousand dollars a show. I think that in order to push punta rock on a world music level they need to try and get on world music festivals, public radio play and push more culturally instead of sexually. Push it as a music that is unique because of our cultural history. Andy P and the rest of them have been able to travel all over the world because they recognize this and utilize it when producing albums and performing in public. A lot of the punta rock artists now are lyrically lame, the music is too fast and sexually explicit. The shows are lame as well. I would be ashamed to bring someone with resources to one of their shows. I know many intellectuals that are very interested in Garifuna music and culture but I wouldn't take them to any of the shows that have people doing foolishness on stage. Especially the young artists that have young women up there "dancing" in a very x rated manner and the artist and a female "humping" on stage. In my opinion it is these acts and the way they are representing the music that will limit how far punta rock music will go. When and if punta rock gets a following like soca, salsa etc then there will be room for different types, however to get started I don't think this is the way to go. Just my opinion.........

I agree with you on certain things, for example, how would these punt rock artist get on these world tours, when people in thier own country don't recognize thier music. Andy P hasn't made an album in a long time, and what he did in the past is now Punta Rock Classic. There was a time when Punta Rock could of made it to the mainstream of popular music. I believe that window of oppertunity has passed and Belizean Artists missed it. I think Andy P, came really close and maybe he should have tried exploiting his fame more by taking some of his fellow Punta Rockers with him on some of those shows.
As far as your comments regarding the shows that are done now, I think all artists express their art differently. What we may consider tasteless, some might actually enjoy. It's good to have variety. Maybe the people that are producing shows right now are the only ones that can't afford to do it. Or maybe they tried the other way, and only a handful of people came out, and lots of money was lost. Regardless what you say, it doesn't matter how much you love your culture, after a while you get tired of losing money.
The world has changed, its all about beautiful woman and sex. And Sex can be represented in classy way. . . then again maybe not.
Lets take off all our clothes. ;D

I don't think there has been a change in the push of Punta rock music. But I do think that Punta Rock artist have to go beyond the shows and way of promoting to get recognize. I agree with Emp that the world music festivals are a great opportunity. They have to think further than the little community they cater to now. There are people that would like to hear this music. I think you have to have the drive and determination like Andy Palacio. And yes why didnt/hasnt he taken some other artist other his wings. But then again are they (artist of today interested in taking it to that level.

i personally feel that the punta artist are trying very hard to promote the punta music....but the garinagu are not supporting them.....i remember couple years ago Paula Castilo was perfoming at a park district festival in Chicago ....only a few Garifuna came out to support the lady....they also had a festival that same year in Wisconsin with Andy Palacio and only a handful of Garifuna showed up....Garinagu need to support the artist and stop fighting one another.....there is stiil a chanc for punta music to make it into the music business but the artist need to focus on the cultural aspect of the music and not the sexiness of the music.
